Coronavirus: Workplace Diversity Part Two

If the pandemic has acted as an accelerant to business trends, it has also become an accelerant to inequality.

Last year, before the onset of coronavirus, the Census Bureau found income inequality was at its highest level in 50 years, with two-thirds of the total wealth in the country owned by the richest 5-percent.

Meanwhile, 4 out of 10 American adults said they would have difficulty covering a $400 unexpected expense, more than 38 million Americans are living in poverty, and more than 14 million children went hungry last month.

When discussing these facts and figures, it is important to remember that there are people behind the numbers.

To do a deeper dive with us on this topic, we're joined by Dane Holmes, co-founder and CEO at Eskalera, a diversely founded company, committed to providing employees and managers with the knowledge and skills to build a more inclusive culture and helping organizations drive systemic and sustainable change.

CBS This Morning: Equal Pay Fight

Chants of "equal pay" interrupted a speech by a top soccer official this week as the U.S. women’s national soccer team celebrated their fourth World Cup title. The players are suing over gender and pay discrimination. The players' fight for parity reflects the national battle for equal pay. A recent study shows women make 49 cents for every dollar a man does, over a 15 year period of their careers. I joined CBS This Morning to discuss ways we can start closing the gender wage gap.

CBS This Morning: Pay Gap Widens

The wage gap separating men and women is much wider than previously thought, according to a new report. The Institute for Women's Policy Research claims women earned $0.49 for each dollar that a man was paid over a 15-year span. That's a big difference from census data that show women make $0.80 for each dollar a man earns. I joined CBS This Morning to discuss the gender pay gap.

Ep. 056 - #MeToo, Workplace Equality and the Gender Gap

As the #MeToo movement sweeps across the world, it’s time for employers to address the issues of sexual harassment, workplace inequality and the gender wage gap.

After recently interviewing two experts in their respective fields, Leigh Gallagher from Fortune and author Jack Myers, here are some key ideas and trends that will help push the movement in the right direction:

  • HR departments will become increasingly more independent
  • Women will take jobs previously held by men
  • Organizations will need to teach, embrace and support young men coming into the workforce
  • Workplace mentoring programs will be instrumental to imbue companies with a culture that supports diversity
  • Women who develop characteristics of assertiveness, confidence and aggressive behavior, and who know when to use these behaviors, will find more success in the workplace

Let’s stop with the talk and move to action mode...it’s way past time to address these issues.
